The Saint Patrick^s Day festival is celebrated on 17 March every year in Ireland and in many countries around the world which share an Irish heritage. The event is in honour of Saint Patrick the patron saint of Ireland who was instrumental in bringing christianity to Ireland.
In Ireland the cellebrations start on the 12th of march and continue around the country until the 17th when the street parades are held in villages, towns, and cities. The festival is an important tourism event for Ireland. The Irish prome minister (Taoiseach, Brian Cowen 2010) has over the years visited the White House where he presents the shamrock to the US president (Obama 2010) as goodwill between the two countries.
